Te Kotahi Research Institute (“TKRI”) in partnership with: New Zealand eScience Infrastructure (“NESI”); Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand (“REANNZ”): Time-evolving Data Science and Artificial Intelligence for Advanced Open Environmental Science (“TAIAO”): Genomics Aotearoa: and the Tikanga in Technology research program are running the inaugural Indigidata Aotearoa wananga in August 2023. It follows the successful Indigidata model established in the USA. https://indigidata.org/

The Indigidata Aotearoa wananga aims to build capacity amongst Māori in: Māori data science, Māori data sovereignty, Māori data ethics, and Māori data applications. 

What is Indigenous Data Science?

Indigenous data science refers to applications and uses of data that have a specific focus on Indigenous or Māori kaupapa. Sometimes that relates to the kaupapa itself (i.e Māori language) or the tangata involved (i.e Māori businesses). The important characteristic is that it supports Indigenous aspirations and self-determination.

What is Indigenous and Māori Data Sovereignty?

Indigenous Data Sovereignty is about creating greater Indigenous control of Indigenous data. Māori Data Sovereignty talks to issues of collection, storage and use of data for whānau, hapū and Iwi.

What are Indigenous and Māori Ethics, and Cultural Understandings?

There are different frameworks that promote Indigenous values and ethics in the use of data including: OCAP ; CARE ; Māori Data Sovereignty Principles ; Nga Tikanga Paihere

Who can apply?

There are 20 fully funded positions available on the program.

The program is open to Māori (tauira, kaitiaki, kaipakihi) who want to better understand the opportunities and challenges associated with māori data science, māori data sovereignty, as well as key technical, cultural and ethical issues.

Applications will be considered from university students in any discipline as well as people with strong iwi, community or business background.
